Modernism describes the movement which flourished especially in the more industrial countries around the time of the First World War. The aim was to contest traditional forms of art, literature, music, architecture and experience. The avantgardes of surrealism, futurism and constructivism ushered in experimentalism and bold departures from realism and classicism. Modernists participated actively in both fascist and communist movements and contributed significantly to the propaganda arts in the regimes that were established by these forces. However, in both contexts, they were soon marginalised in favour of cultural forces of a more conventional stamp. Nevertheless, architectural modernism was important in some contexts such as Italian fascism.
