By means of indoctrination, totalitarian regimes inculcate ideas and attitudes in their populations without allowing these to be critically assessed or questioned. In this sense, indoctrination differs from education. It is informed by dogma and prejudice and uses tools such as fear, hostility to an enemy, and emotion to shape people’s views and outlook. Indoctrination is usually achieved by depriving people of alternative sources of information and ensuring that the same messages are repeated insistently across different media and over time.
