The square was set up on a site previously occupied by the vast gardens of the nearby Ursuline Monastery. It is located between the Parliament and Subičeva Street, the Ursuline monastery by Slovenska Street and Erjavceva and Valvasorjeva Street.

The Statute of revolution is a monument designed for contest in 1961, when a commission chose Drago Tršar's idea of “tree of life, tree of revolution” as the winning design. It is a bronze statue on granite base.
